Charlie Landsborough
comes to Bangor County Down to support North Down CABAt the Elim Conference Centre, Saturday November 21st at 8.00 pm
‘Like a good wine, he matures quietly over a long period of time. When the cork is popped it was well worth the wait’ (Gerry Anderson BBC Radio Ulster). Charlie Landsborough isn't easy to categorise. Listen to his gentle voice, his personal and inspirational lyrics and there'll be a bit of C & W, some R & R, he can be folksy, often gospel, but either way he has sold over 1 million albums.
The nation's favourites seem to be, 'What colour is the wind, daddy?' 'A little bit of heaven, and perhaps 'My forever friend' – which he dedicates to, ‘My Saviour Jesus Christ.’
But he has also recorded some excellent cover versions; 'You Were Always on my Mind,' the beautiful, 'The Twelfth of Never,' the ever popular Lennon/McCartney, 'Long and Winding Road,' and of course Foster & Allen’s, 'Maggie.'
He has toured UK and Ireland twice a year since 1995, this time he's performing in Bangor as a fundraiser for North Down Citizens' Advice Bureau.
North Down CAB's history can be traced back to 1941 – by coincidence, the year Charlie Landsborough was born – when almost 1,000 people were killed in two air raids in Belfast. An information centre was set up to help people trace soldiers missing in action, rationing allowances and contacting Prisoners of War. The first Citizens' Advice Bureau was set up in the office of the Belfast Council of Social Welfare and became the centre around which information and advice was provided.
Over the years, the importance of information and advice increased; it was said that, ‘the consumer ought to know or be able to find out what his rights are and against whom he can maintain them.’
Things have moved on and today, CAB is the largest advice charity in NI. In North Down alone this year almost 16,000 clients contacted them with over 25,000 queries, up 26% on the previous year. We have increased our clients’ income by just under £3m, and the total amount of debt they helped people mitigate was £8.5m, up from £5m last year; that’s a 70% increase!
What does CAB do?
CAB helps people resolve problems of debt, benefits, housing, legal, discrimination, employment, immigration, consumer, and more. In short, so far as money problems are concerned we help our clients maximise their income and minimise their outgoings. This help is offered regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, nationality, disability and religion.
Completely impartial, Free & Confidential.
'We don’t tell our clients what to do, we inform, we advise and we empower them by enabling them to manage their own problems, and we see that as very important. We ensure that people don’t suffer through lack of knowledge of their rights and services available to them, but we also exercise a responsible influence on the development of social services both locally and nationally.'
In addition to all this, CAB works with a number of partners:
Dealing with Debt is a project run in partnership with DETI
Money Talks, is a partnership with the Northern Bank; financial info to young people.
National Minimum Wage helpline in partnership with HMRC and BERR (Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform).
MacMillan Cancer Support at RVH, BCH & Mater Hospital.
Benefit Uptake in tandem with SSA helping people claim benefits to which they are entitled.
